Brussels Parliament grants new legal status to animals

The Brussels Parliament has unanimously adopted a draft ordinance aimed at recognizing the specific legal status of animals by recognizing them as "a living beings endowed with sensitivity, self-interest and dignity that benefit from a special protection ".

In the legislation currently in force, an animal is considered as an object, and is included in the category of property. With the change introduced, animals will be recognized in the future as a specific group within the society, which will offer them a high degree of protection, at the legal level in particular, said the Secretary of State of Brussels Bianca Debaets (CD & V), in charge of Animal Welfare.
