New “no-kill” legislation in Madeira (Portugal)

The Regional Legislative Decree No. 13/2016 / M state the prohibition to kill stray animals and the implementation of neutering programs in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. The Madeiran Parliament passed a law banning the killing of pet animals and implements sterilization policy as an animal overpopulation control method. The Law says that in the last decade the number of people who own pets has grown in a remarkable way in Portugal, and that the increased interaction between animals and people aroused a greater awareness to the question of cruelty and animal abandonment in society. This reality led to the emergence Law No. 69/2014 of 29 August, which criminalizes cruelty and abandonment of pets. The new legislation in Madeira meets the associations objectives to put an end to the killing methods.
